At a first glance, I was terribly shocked, as you are now. Yes, the title of post refers to the rumors going on in Industry since last couple of days.
Till date, we all know that Google was founded by two co-founders only, Larry (Lawrence) Page & Sergey Brin but is it truth? Or is there any third Co-Founder of Google? A person named Hung Hsien Chang (Hubert Chang), a Ph.D. holder from NYU in late 2002 claimed to be the 3rd Co-founder of Google. He had claimed about this, but both Google and Stanford Professor Rajeev Motwani has denied that he founded Google. He said that:
“Google was designed in 1997 Feb by Hubert Chang (me), Larry Page, and Sergey Brin. Through intensive collaboration with Larry and Sergey, Google was designed. The plan includes the search engine algorithm, business model, the name of the company, a graduate school like corp culture, the outline of system architecture and Google’s growing path. Because I had personal cause to pursue for Ph.D., I told them I will contact them years afterwards, assuming I have finished my Ph.D. In late 2002.”
According to Hubert, in late 2002 after finishing his PhD, when Hubert contacted Google, again the responses apparently weren’t too fruitful. He added, “It’s been 10 years, and I think this information needs to be known.”
So do you think Google has any Third Co-founder? Is this a rumor or truth? Lets see what Google said about this. Google said:
“There is no substance to Hubert Chang’s claims – he had no involvement in the creation of Google. Neither Larry or Sergey have any recollection of meeting him – however, given the number of people they’ve met in the last decade it’s impossible to say categorically that they never have. Rajeev Motwani, the Professor and Director of Graduate Studies at Stanford, believes he may have shared some emails from Mr Chang with Larry and Sergey in 1997 or 1998. But in any case PageRank had already been developed by that time and was a working prototype.”
TechCrunch has a statement by Stanford Professor Rajeev Motwani:
“To the best of my knowledge, his claims about being a founder of Google, coming up with the name and/or the business plan etc, are completely unfounded in reality. I am sure I would have noticed a third founder, if one existed, since I was working closely with Larry and Sergey at Stanford the time.”
This all makes a point clear to certain stage that Google is founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin only, and the Hubert claiming to be founder can be void. Lets see what Hubert does to back up himself and prove it.
